German Inland Shipping Museum

Welcome

… to Germany’s most comprehensive museum dedicated to the history of inland shipping. Located in the former Ruhrort bathhouse, a charming building combining historicist and Art Nouveau elements, our museum is situated directly on the Rhine River and at the world’s largest inland port.

  • The Museum

    Experience the history of shipping, from the Stone Age to the present day, in a multimedia adventure spread over three floors. Discover numerous detailed models and interactive exhibits.

  • The Way

    A themed trail leads you from the museum along the towpath to our historic fleet, moored below the Shippers’ Exchange in Ruhrort.

  • The museum ships

    Come aboard the paddle tugboat “Oscar Huber” and the bucket-chain steam dredger “Minden” and have a look around – from the engine room to the former crew and living quarters.

News

The women’s swimming hall will be closed to the public on November 3, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM due to a private event. Free admission will be offered to all other exhibition areas during this time.

Familien-unter-Dampf

Exhibition on Life and Work at Sea Between 1830 and 1970. Opening on March 23rd at 2 pm. Free admission. A lecture will be followed by a curator-led tour.
