High-tech of shipping history
Built in 1922, the museum ship ‘Oscar Huber’ is a unique cultural monument. Until the 1960s, this paddle steamer hauled up to seven barges laden with cargo on each journey, representing a technology that was in use for over a century. As diesel-powered push boats became increasingly common in the late 1950s, steam tugs were gradually phased out. The ‘Oscar Huber’ is the only paddle tug on the Rhine to have escaped the scrap heap. Today, she is moored at the towpath near the Shipowners’ Exchange, where you can marvel at her impressive technology. The engine room, as well as the former crew and living quarters, are accessible to visitors. The bucket chain steam dredger ‘Minden’ and the crane ship ‘Fendel 147’ are moored right next to the ‘Oscar Huber’.
Group visits to the museum ships are possible in winter upon request, weather permitting. Subject to change.
