The Museum of German Inland Shipping in Duisburg-Ruhrort has existed since 1979. The “Society for the Promotion of the Museum of German Inland Shipping Duisburg-Ruhrort e.V.” is even two years older.
In September 1977, 41 people came together with the goal of realizing a dream of many Duisburgers for more than 50 years: the founding of a significant shipping museum. As the goal of the support association, the statutes state: “The association exclusively and directly pursues non-profit purposes (…), namely the expansion of the Museum of German Inland Shipping into a collection of models of all objects and accessories related to shipping and the ship, as well as the promotion of scientific research and information related to the collections for interested citizens.”
A large part of the exhibits and storage holdings belong to the association. Many measures implemented by the museum are only possible with the financial and ideological support of the society. In addition, the board and members constantly assert their influence and contribute to making the institution even better known.
