Lighthouses have captivated people for centuries. They symbolize strength, but also solitude, isolation, and inaccessibility. They evoke wanderlust as well as homesickness. They withstand storms, warn of danger, and provide a sense of security. Artist Daniela A. Schur could not escape this fascination and made lighthouses the main subject of her works. After successful exhibitions, including one in Brussels, some of her works can now be seen in Estonia.
Although she enjoyed drawing and experimenting with colors and techniques as a child, she initially made a different career choice: she studied business administration and worked in auditing for several years. Her intense love for the North Sea eventually won out over her head – she rediscovered the play with colors, materials, textures, and architectures and has been working as a freelance artist since 2014, she describes her career path.
The paintings are created using mixed media, which means that Daniela A. Schur combines acrylic paint with various materials to bring her lighthouses to life on canvas – in small and medium sizes and in portrait format according to the motif. The strength and symbolism of her favorite motifs are emphasized by a strong, fresh, and striking color scheme.
